In high-temperature thermal energy storage (TES) and heat transfer loops, defining molten salt conditions is a critical engineering task. Eutectic mixtures of binary salts, traditionally containing 60% Sodium Nitrate (NaNO₃) and 40% Potassium Nitrate (KNO₃), are widely utilized because they exhibit a distinct melting point (eutectic temperature of approximately 220°C). By adjusting the purity and chemical ratio, systems can operate effectively in a liquid state between 260°C and 560°C.
Maintaining optimal conditions requires mitigating high-temperature thermal decomposition, which yields unwanted nitrite formations and corrosive oxygen byproducts. Additionally, control of impurities like chlorides, sulfates, and moisture is critical. High chloride concentrations damage protective oxide coatings on stainless steel and alloy piping, accelerating localized pitting and stress corrosion cracking.
Industrial Grade versus Solar Grade is distinguished by the concentration of trace contaminants. Standard agricultural components introduce calcium, chlorides, and insoluble minerals that form mineral crusts and restrict flow inside heat exchangers. Vojin New Materials regulates total chlorides below 100 ppm, extending the operational lifespan of receiver pipes to 25+ years.
